평생 세수 한 번 하지 않는 노인 Twits, 마치 이쑤시개처럼 뻣뻣한 수염에는 온갖 음식찌꺼기가 덕지덕지 붙어 있을 정도로 지저분하기 짝이 없습니다. 그런데 그의 부인도 만만찮은데요, 그래서 부창부수라는 말이 있겠죠.
예순이 넘은 이 부부는 하루가 정말 바쁜데요, 서로를 괴롭히기 위한 고민을 하고 직접 장난을 치다보면 하루가 금방 지나가는 거죠. 문제는 이들 부부의 장난이 주위에도 민폐를 끼친다는 겁니다. 대표적으로 부부와 함께 살고 있는 원숭이 가족인데요, 도가 지나친 악질장난에 피해를 입은 원숭이 가족은 자신들과 마찬가지로 고생하고 있는 새장 속의 새들과 연합을 했어요.
언제나 즐겁고 유쾌한 웃음폭탄을 던지는 작가 Roald Dahl의 《The Twits》입니다. 로알드 달 작품의 특징 중에 하나가 쉬운 문장과 상황에 대한 뛰어난 묘사죠. 《The Twits》는 여기에 권선징악이라는 주제까지 가지고 있어 아이들의 교육용으로 큰 인기를 모으고 있는데요, 실제로 미국의 학교 교재로 사용이 되는 작품입니다. 내적 묘사보다는 재미있는 설정과 상황이 주된 내용이다 보니 아이들의 상황극으로 그만이거든요.
