《Forest Born》은 Shannon Hale의 프린세스 4부작 중 완결편으로 국내에는 '마음을 읽는 소녀 린'으로 출시되었다. 애초 Shannon Hale은 프린세스 연작을 기획하면서 '1부 The Goose Girl', '2부 Enna Burning', '3부 River Secrets,로 완결을 지었으나 열화와 같은 인기에 힘입어 프린세스 시리즈에 하나를 더 보탠 것이 바로 《Forest Born》이다.
Rin은 3부인《River Secrets(새총잡이 첩보원과 물의 비밀)》의 주인공인 Razo의 동생으로 그녀 또한 특별한 능력을 지녔다. 바로 마음을 읽는 것.
문득 Mel Gibson이 주연인 영화 ‘What Women Want'이 생각난다. 영화에서는 다소 트러블이 일어날 수도 있는 인간관계와 상황을 상당히 희화화해서 표현했기에 마음을 읽는 능력이 제법 부럽기도 하지만, 《Forest Born》은 그 것이 과연 축복인지에 의문을 던진다.
인간들의 마음에 내재된 거짓, 위선, 욕망 등과 이것이 어떤 갈등과 상처를 주는지 적나라하게 표현해 내고 있다. Shannon Hale의 그 모든 혼란을 헤쳐나가는 주인공 Rin을 통해 우리 청소년들이 정신적 스트레스를 어떻게 극복하고 자신의 진로를 모색해 나갈 것인지를 조언하고 있다.
4부에서는 완결편인 만큼 Isi(Ani), Enna, Razo 등 전편의 모든 주인공이 총출동하며, 마찬가지로 왕궁의 음모를 분쇄하는데 Rin이 마음을 읽는 능력으로 큰 역할을 한다. 결과만 말해놓고 나니 “또 그런 이야기야?”하는 생각이 들 수도 있으나, Shannon Hale은 뻔한 이야기를 윤기가 자르르 흐르는 총천연색으로 흥미진진하게 풀어낸다.
프린세스 4부작 은 중세 판타지 풍의 모험담으로, 기운이 떨어지거나 우울할 때 읽으면 부쩍 힘을 준다. 무엇보다 사춘기를 비롯해서 정체성 혼란과 미래에 대한 불안 등 가치관을 세워나가야 할 아이들에게 참으로 도움이 될 도서다. 어릴 때 읽던 책은 대체로 커서 다시 읽는 법은 없지만, 그 중에서도 좋은 책은 계속해서 손을 타기 마련인데, 그 중에 하나가 바로 프린세스 4부작 이 아닐까 싶다.

Forest Born centers on Razo's sister, Rin, and her special abilities. The struggle that she goes through as she begins to recognize her talent of persuasion and her elemental connection to the forest brings the typical fantasy themes of good vs. evil to a place that makes them very personal. Rin discovered as a child that her words could be powerful. But that power left her feeling confused and wrong. Since that time, the wrongness has curled up like a snake inside her, making her doubt whether she can ever find peace. Rin encounters Isi, Enna, and Dasha from the previous Bayern stories and through them she finds hope; perhaps what makes her different could be a blessing, if she is able to find balance in her gifts. Lurking throughout the story is the tumultuous backdrop of diplomatic negotiations and threats of war. Everything finally comes to a head when Isi's nemesis from Goose Girl returns and kidnaps her son. All four women need to work together to defeat Selia, who has been completely corrupted and consumed by her people-speaking power of persuasion. Fans of the earlier titles as well as admirers of the genre will find Rin's journey a compelling read.—
